ESPC Wishes Malaysians A Happy New Year 2022

by Shah Farouq

After enduring the most of 2021 in various lockdowns, Malaysians rejoiced in October – when after a change in government – saw the easing of restrictions that allowed us to somewhat regain a sense of normalcy. And many hopeful Malaysians were looking to end 2021 in a sweet note but for thousands that too were dashed. The torrential downpour which lasted for 24 hours, and described as a ‘once-in-100-years’ weather event, left a devastation in its wake. But the silver lining in this incident, were Malaysians.

Once again, ordinary Malaysian rose to the occasion – people from all walks of life once again came together to organize rescue operations as well as clothes and fund collections that are even until today ongoing. The race card that the politicians have always played, were rubbished and despite the wreck, the sight of Malaysians of different race and religion helping one another has been nothing short of amazing and promising.

As we bid farewell to 2021, there are only two items in my wish list for 2022. That we Malaysians always remain united in our diversity and never let the opposition play us against one another to instill disunity. The second, is that we take climate change seriously. The downpour and flood that took place is our undoing. Our global greed has accelerated climate change and at the COP 26, it was said we are already too late. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in his wrap up message to the conference said “Our fragile planet is hanging by a thread. We are still knocking on the door of climate catastrophe. It is time to go into emergency mode — or our chance of reaching net-zero will itself be zero.”

So folks, let us all do our part to take care of Mother Earth so we do not suffer in her wrath. Happy New Year, everyone and let us have a year filled with goodness and happiness.
