Malaysia to Open Borders

While almost no country has remain untouched by the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysians have had it pretty hard from different forms of lock down that came dressed in pretty acronyms. From MCO to TEMCO – Malaysians who were once impressed at the number of acronyms the Majlis Keselamatan Negara taskforce are by now weary at these abbreviations that do not help Malaysians deal with the pandemic fatigue.

Thankfully over the last month, many states and its people have been rejoicing at the promotion that has moved many states stuck at Phases 1 and 2 of the National Recovery Plan to Phase 3, which allows leniency to Malaysians who have been stuck at home for more than 15 months.

The leniency is also mostly due to the rapid vaccination rate. In a Malaysia Now article, it stated that “Based on a rolling seven-day average of vaccine doses administered per 100 people, Malaysia is currently outperforming the global rate and doing better than other developed countries, showed data from Our World in Data.”

With the light at the end of the light becoming highly visible, more good news greets Malaysians. The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Bin Yaakob said that international travel looks possible for Malaysians from December onwards.

FMT in its article stated that in an interview with selected senior editors last week, Ismail said the government will consider reopening Malaysia’s international borders once 90% of the adults complete their Covid-19 vaccination.

Ismail said Malaysians need not apply for the MyTravelPass (MTP) for international travel anymore but the quarantine rules will remain.

He further added that the Government intends to open state borders first and it could be as early as in two weeks since almost 85.5% of the adult population have been vaccinated.
