The signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between UNIMY and Lithan Academy took place on July 23rd, and the event was officiated and witnessed by Yang Berhormat Datuk Wira Hajah Mas Ermieyati binti Hj Samsudin, Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (MEDAC)

The Ministry has been devoted to investing in the cultivation of Malaysia’s digital economy, whether through financial resources or otherwise. This is in-line with their goal to make Malaysia a leader in the digital sector of ASEAN. One of the initiatives is to train and upskill the workforce to be digitally savvy in order to capitalize on the benefits offered by the integration of modern digital systems into businesses and services. The Ministry is committed to ensuring the growth of the digital and ICT field which will empower our citizens with more effective and efficient solutions.

The Ministry also acknowledged the pivotal role of educational institutions such as UNIMY and Lithan Academy in contributing toward enhancing the capabilities of our workforce especially in today’s economic landscape where much change and adaptation is necessary to remain competitive

This collaboration between UNIMY, Lithan Academy, and the Ministry of Entrepreneurial Development aims to develop 5000 potential gig entrepreneurs over the next 5 years and as a result foster more attention and growth for the digital economy.

As one of the front-running digital technology universities, UNIMY is dedicated to upgrading its programs to satisfy the current industry’s changing needs to create a better future through technology, education, research, and innovation.

In accordance with its purpose of providing students with a comprehensive and practical educational experience, UNIMY has partnered with Lithan Academy to offer two industry specific programs, namely: ‘UNIMY’s Certified Professional Course’ and ‘UNIMY’s ‘Certified Specialist Course’. For both programs, students will be given the chance to choose from three areas of specialization which are: Digital Systems, Software Engineering, and Digital Business.

‘UNIMY’s Certified Professional Course’ is a four-year program where students will spend a study period of one year at UNIMY and subsequently be placed into an industry apprenticeship for the remaining three years. This course is open to those with STPM/ A- levels qualifications or its equivalent. On the other hand, ‘UNIMY’s Certified Specialist Course’ is a two-year program consisting of a six-month study period followed by an eighteen-month apprenticeship placement within the industry.

A unique characteristic of these programs is that, upon completion graduates already possess one and a half to three years of solid working experience through their apprenticeship placement. Students will be paid a salary during the apprenticeship phase which is another significant advantage since students will be able to learn and simultaneously support themselves financially.

The intention behind the designed program structure is to prepare graduates who are equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to fulfill the demands of industry positions without having to go through a transition period from the study environment to the work environment.

UNIMY and Lithan Academy are looking forward to working hand-in hand with the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives by seeking the Ministry’s support to recruit local and international industry leaders who can be mentors to the students.

Through the combination of an apprenticeship placement and mentorship during the programs, UNIMY and Lithan Academy aspire to familiarize students with the workings of the digital gig economy which will enable graduates to start and run their own gig economy if they chose. In addition, the mentorships and apprenticeship placements will help instill graduates with the values, ethics, and attitudes needed to be a successful entrepreneur.
